The Princess of Wales, together with her daughter Charlotte, performed a piano duet at a Christmas concert, writes the BBC.
They performed a piece by Scottish composer Erland Cooper. The recording was made in advance at Windsor Castle last week specifically for the Christmas broadcast of the event on ITV1.
Kensington Palace intrigued viewers before the start of the program by publishing a video of Catherine and an unknown musician at the time playing the piano, with the caption "a special duet…".
In the recording, they sit in the Inner Hall of Windsor Castle at the piano and perform Holm Sound — a piece which is known to them and which they enjoy playing together at home.
The Princess of Wales played only with her left hand, and Charlotte — only with her right. The musical number was accompanied by footage of guests arriving at the Christmas service: the Prince of Wales and Catherine watched their children tie paper ribbons with their names to a "tree of connections" outside the abbey, symbolizing unity, kindness, and shared values.
In the voiceover of the video, Catherine says:
"At its heart, Christmas speaks of love, manifested in the simplest and most human forms. Not in sentimental or grand gestures, but in tender ones. In the moment you are heard. In a word of comfort. In a friendly conversation. In a helping hand. In presence. These simple acts of care may seem insignificant, but they contribute to the beautiful mosaic of life to which we all belong."
For Catherine, who passed exams in piano and music theory, this is not the first experience performing at a Christmas concert. At the first Together at Christmas concert in 2021, she unexpectedly accompanied singer-songwriter Tom Walker on the piano during his performance of his Christmas composition For Those Who Can't Be Here.
Organizers stated that the theme of this year's event — "the power of love and unity" — was chosen in recognition of the contributions of people across the country to society. According to them, in a world that increasingly feels disconnected, the celebration aims to remind of the value of love in all its manifestations.
It is noted that the inclusion of the duet in the program was Catherine's personal initiative and was intended to emphasize the importance of human connections.
"The time, care and compassion you give — often quietly, without words and without expectation of recognition — have a truly enormous impact on the lives of others," the Princess wrote in a letter enclosed with each copy of the service program.
