Nine bison brought to a Spanish village. They will try to solve a serious problem
In the small Spanish village of El Recuenco, in the province of Guadalajara, an experimental project has begun , within which nine European bison — five females and four males — have been released into a fenced area. Scientists want to find out if these animals can reduce the risk of wildfires and help restore ecosystems.

The bison are monitored using GPS devices. Researchers are studying their diet, stress levels, and impact on vegetation.
The idea of the project is that the bison will graze on grass, shrubs, and young wood, which in hot weather turn into dry tinder and can become a source of fires. An adult bison can eat up to 60 kilograms of vegetation per day.
Proponents of the project call bison "landscape engineers," as they not only eat plants but also trample dense thickets, contributing to greater biodiversity in the natural environment.
However, not everyone supports this initiative. Critics argue that local species of wild and domestic herbivores can perform the same role. They also doubt whether bison, which traditionally live in colder regions of Europe, will adapt well to the hot and dry climate of Spain.
The question of the historical presence of bison on the Iberian Peninsula also causes debate. Some researchers refer to ancient rock paintings, but their opponents believe that these depict the extinct steppe bison, not the modern European bison.
Over the next two years, scientists will evaluate the results of the experiment. If the bison can reduce the amount of brush and successfully settle in, it will be a strong argument for expanding such projects.
