In Antarctica, scientists found a new island. Previously they thought it was an iceberg
The discovery was made by a polar expedition of the German Alfred Wegener Institute in the Weddell Sea , in an area with a large number of ice floes. Therefore, on satellite images, the object did not stand out and looked like another iceberg.

Even when researchers approached it by ship, at first they also thought it was ice. However, they later noticed a difference: it had a greyer color and looked as if it was covered with silt or mud, unlike clean white icebergs.
After closer inspection, it became clear that it was a real island. It has not yet been named and will be officially marked on geographical maps after the completion of studies.

The island is very small: its area is about 6200 square meters, which is less than a few city buildings. It is elongated in shape — approximately 130 meters long and about 50 meters wide. The highest point rises approximately 16 meters above sea level.
The polar expedition consisted of 93 scientists from various countries. They were engaged in studying the seabed and ice movement, including the Larsen Ice Shelf. Researchers also used drones to photograph from above and fix the precise location of the new object.
Scientists note that the discovery occurred during work in an area that was considered poorly studied and potentially dangerous for navigation.
