— There is a simple recipe, we didn't invent it, it was developed in Soviet times. Firstly, don't get dirty, don't get soiled.
— But if you work in a state hospital — do you get soiled? — asked Katerina Gordeeva.
— In what way do you get soiled?
— You receive money from a state hospital. You pay taxes, and the state uses those taxes to buy missiles [to bomb Ukraine].
— Well no, — Akunin dismissed, — try not to pay taxes in the country. I absolutely disagree with that.
— Firstly, don't get soiled, don't participate in nastiness. Secondly, support those who are worse off than you. This is a very strong drug. When you help someone, you yourself start to feel much better. And don't change your convictions and your values. This is the minimum. Few can be a hero or an underground operative. But this is the minimum. This is what my generation learned back in the USSR. For those who are older, it's returning, and for those who are younger, unfortunately, they are forced to learn it anew.
