Vitebsk Zoo to be moved to a different location

Vitebsk has once again returned to the idea of moving the city zoo to the outskirts of the city. Currently, it is located in the center — in a pedestrian zone in the area of Suvorova and Yanka Kupala streets — but authorities consider such a location not the most convenient, writes "Vitebskie Vesti".

It is planned that the zoo will be moved to the Bilevo microdistrict. This idea was discussed earlier, but was not implemented for a long time. Now, the project has been decided to be revived, albeit in a slightly modified form.

In the new location, the zoo will be made more compact — approximately 2-2.5 hectares. They plan to create more modern and comfortable conditions for animals, as well as convenient infrastructure for visitors. In addition to enclosures, attractions and food zones may appear.

For now, it's only about preparing project documentation — specific construction timelines have not been named.

In turn, the green area in the city center where the zoo is currently located is planned to be transformed into a regular park.

The Vitebsk Zoo itself has existed since 1992. It houses over 70 species of animals — mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish. Some animals live indoors, while others are in open enclosures. The relocation should not only change the location but also update the living conditions and the development of the zoo as a whole.
