Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz declares state of emergency in the country

Protests in Bolivia began after Paz canceled fuel subsidies to reduce the budget deficit.
Despite the cancellation of unpopular measures, protests have only widened, and now the dissatisfied are demanding higher wages and the president's resignation.
Among the disgruntled are many supporters of former President Evo Morales; they have blocked key roads, cutting off supplies of food, fuel, and medicine to many regions, including the capital La Paz.
