How often should you brush your hair?

Brushing is an important part of hair care, but excessive enthusiasm for this procedure can do more harm than good. Scientists and hair care specialists told BBC how often one should use a brush and what mistakes are best avoided.

People have used combs since prehistoric times. They were needed not only for beauty but also for hygiene, as they helped remove debris, dirt, parasites from hair, and untangle knots.

In the 19th century, when long hair was considered an important part of female beauty, caring for it could take a lot of time. Hair was usually first combed to untangle it, and then brushed with a natural bristle brush to smooth it and distribute the natural oil secreted by the scalp along its entire length.

Later, the appearance of brushes with synthetic bristles made them cheaper and more accessible. Along with this, hair care tips became more widespread, but not all of them are scientifically substantiated.

Why frequent brushing does not accelerate hair growth

One of the most persistent misconceptions is the belief that frequent brushing can accelerate hair growth. Specialists do not confirm this: hair grows from follicles, and mechanical impact on the already grown part does not significantly affect this process.

Moreover, excessive or harsh brushing can damage hair. If strands become heavily tangled and then untangled with great force, the hair is subjected to significant stress. Over time, this can damage its structure, resulting in split ends and increased breakage.

At the same time, researchers note that in everyday life, the harm from careful brushing is insignificant for most people. Coloring, chemical procedures, and exposure to high temperatures have a much greater impact on hair condition.

Hidden benefits of brushing

Brushing itself is not the problem. It is usually not the brush that causes harm, but how it is used.

Regular and careful brushing helps prevent large knots and tangles. If you don't brush for a long time, you then have to untangle your hair with more force, which increases the risk of damage.

In addition, a brush helps remove hair that has already fallen out naturally, dead skin particles, and dirt from the scalp. If all this accumulates, irritation can occur.

How to brush your hair correctly

There is no universal rule for everyone. Specialists advise brushing straight and wavy hair at least three times a week. If necessary, this can be done more often — once or twice a day, but without abrupt movements or strong pressure.

Straight and wavy hair should preferably not be brushed wet. After washing, they may seem stronger and more elastic, but in reality, they become more vulnerable. Under the influence of water, the hair structure temporarily changes: it becomes more flexible, but less resistant to damage.

With very curly hair, the rule is different. They should not be brushed dry. It's better to detangle such hair during or immediately after washing, using products that help the brush glide more easily through the strands.

As specialists note, curly hair has completely different physical properties that have long been ignored in scientific literature and the beauty industry: it loses moisture more often, forms knots more easily, and can be more prone to damage. Therefore, it particularly needs careful care.

Which brush to choose

It's important not only how often you brush, but also with what. If you have curly hair or if you still want to brush wet straight or wavy hair, it's best to use a wet brush with flexible plastic bristles. A stiff comb in such a situation, on the contrary, can increase the risk of damage.

For dry hair, brushes with soft bristles that are gentle on the scalp are suitable. They help smooth the hair and distribute natural oil along its length.

Some modern brushes combine several types of teeth and bristles: some separate strands, others smooth them, distribute oil, and add volume.

Thus, the answer to the question of how often to brush depends on the hair type, technique, and the brush itself. And if you sometimes don't feel like meticulously styling your hair, modern fashion seems to be on your side: naturalness and slight carelessness are in trend today.
