Preliminary reports suggest their safety rope broke.

According to Mash data, 40-year-old Roman and his 11-year-old son Platon are from Donetsk, but have lived in a village in Stavropol Krai for the past few years.
Last year, they had already ascended Elbrus to the western peak. They didn't reach the summit by 300 meters because the child felt unwell. Nevertheless, at the Garabashi station, they raised the flag of the boy's school. Afterwards, they received gratitude from the educational institution's management.
This time, they also trekked for several days. They reached their goal and began descending — at this moment, according to preliminary data, their safety rope broke.
The boy died from his injuries, while the man broke his ribs and knees but managed to call for help.
According to "Baza", the accident occurred on the eastern slope of the mountain. After the fall, the father and son are located at an altitude of about 4,200 meters.
Rescuers have already set off for the scene — the injured person requires urgent evacuation and hospitalization.
