Statkevich accused Lukashenka's regime of ethnocide and named the antidote

Former political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich wrote on his Telegram channel how to understand the recent scandalous statements by key propagandists of Lukashenka's regime and what needs to be done so that their efforts are in vain.

Excuse me, but I'm talking about dogs again. I cannot understand why someone, barked at by my dogs, begins to complain about them. Even to rebuke them or explain something to them.

Dogs have their own logic. They bark because they are fed for it. For signaling the owner about strangers, about a real or potential threat, trying to scare and drive away strangers. That's their job. Analyzing changes in the amplitude or spectrum of dog barking is a futile exercise. It's better to figure out why the owner ordered them to bark or why they themselves decided that their barking on a specific occasion would be perceived positively by the owner, for which the dogs would get an extra bowl of food.

When I see or read overly odious statements by official propagandists, I perceive them simply — as the voicing of their master's thoughts. And this is the most terrifying thing.

Because it's not they who want to "cleanse the nationalist infection with a dirty broom" — our history, national culture, traditions, clothes, language — everything that creates national identity, that makes us a distinctive nation. It's not they who want to "remove" all of the above because we "loved it." They simply heard or sensed the desires of the one who feeds them, and they voice them.

Previously, official propagandists often spoke about the national oppression of Belarusians by Poles in Western Belarus in the 20-30s of the last century. About Polonization, the prohibition of education in Belarusian, about the dominance of Polish in state institutions. They even used the words "ethnocide of the Belarusian nation by Poles." For some reason, they shyly remained silent about the Russification of Belarusians in Eastern Belarus, about mass repressions, about the destruction of 80% of Belarusian writers in the NKVD.

But now Belarus is supposedly an independent Belarusian state. And what about the Belarusian language here? A rhetorical question. I recently read that currently, only 0.13% of schoolchildren in Minsk are educated in Belarusian. And now they've even gotten to clothes, to Kupalle and Grunwald. If anyone doesn't know, I'll give the definition of the word "ethnocide":

"Ethnocide — is the destruction or demolition of ethnic identity."

So stop emotionally commenting on the barking. The situation is completely clear. Let's rather think about what to do to preserve everything we love, to prevent our nation from being "removed" or "swept away." In today's conditions, when all material national characteristics are objects of persecution, it is not easy to do this. Only intangible ones remain. The main one of them is language.

I understand it's not easy. But let's, at least, start by reading Belarusian-language books — despite bans on certain authors or books, despite the decreasing number of Belarusian-language publications, there are online libraries of Belarusian books that need readers and our support. It's not for nothing that they are being attacked. The next step is to start writing in Belarusian on social networks. And most importantly — to speak. I understand it's difficult. So you can start with a few words: "Thank you, please, hello, goodbye." Everywhere — from the shop to work. That way we will know that we exist, that Belarus lives.
