«Apparently, nerves gave out». Kubrakov defended a migrant taxi driver who hit a passenger
Belarusian Interior Minister Ivan Kubrakov commented on the conflict between a taxi driver and two female passengers in Minsk, a video of which went viral online on July 23.
As previously reported, the girl and her friend asked the driver to turn down the music. After this, an argument arose between the parties, during which the driver slapped the passenger in the face.
Employees of the capital's police quickly identified the driver. It turned out that he is a foreign citizen, studies at one of the Belarusian higher education institutions, and works part-time as a taxi driver. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the man admitted his guilt and repented. He also stated that the girl immediately informed him that she was a blogger.
«It turns out that the whole way, while they were driving, they were filming this guy on a mobile phone. He doesn't know Russian very well and several times asked them to put away the phone. Afterward, apparently, his nerves gave out, and he hit with his hand – wanting to knock out the phone,» Kubrakov said.
He expressed disapproval that instead of immediately contacting the police by calling 102 or using the department's chatbot, information about the incident was first published online.
Kubrakov also commented on numerous calls in social networks to punish the driver, including deporting him or depriving him of freedom. He asserts that each similar case must be considered individually and only after a full clarification of all circumstances.
