Pavel Mickiewicz, who left Belarus back in the 2000s, was sentenced in absentia to five years in a penal colony
He heads the Polish fund "Okno na Wschód" (Window to the East).
On July 27, the Hrodna Regional Court delivered a verdict in absentia (under special proceedings) against Pavel Mickiewicz. He was found guilty under two articles of the Criminal Code: "discrediting the Republic of Belarus" (Art. 369-1) and "facilitating extremist activity, committed repeatedly by a group of persons by prior conspiracy" (Part 2 of Art. 361-4).
Under the first article, Mickiewicz was sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment, and under the second — 5 years. Ultimately, he received 5 years in a penal colony with a fine of 500 base units (22,500 rubles).
Pavel Mickiewicz left Belarus more than 20 years ago. In 2008, he founded the "Okno na Wschód" (Window to the East) fund in Poland, where he currently heads the board. In recent years, one of the main directions of the organization's work has been assisting displaced Belarusians.
