Canadian PM Welcomes Closer EU Ties, but Outlines Membership Limits
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has positively responded to the proposal by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to make Canada the first "associated state" of the European Union. However, he emphasized that Ottawa does not seek full EU membership or a limitation of its own sovereignty, writes Euronews.
Ursula von der Leyen proposed creating such a format in her annual State of the European Union address. However, the specific terms and mechanisms of "associated membership" are yet to be defined.
Speaking in the European Parliament, Carney welcomed this initiative. He referred to polls showing that the overwhelming majority of Canadians support much closer ties with Brussels. At the same time, the Prime Minister noted that Canada cannot and does not want to become a full member of the EU, so the discussion should be about a different format of relations.
After his speech, when asked whether the phrase "associated membership" satisfied him, Carney replied that the precise terminology should be decided by Europe. According to him, the content of the future agreement will be much more important.
At the same time, the Canadian Prime Minister stressed that the issue of sovereignty is fundamental for Ottawa. He stated that Canada seeks partnerships that complement its capabilities and strengthen the country's sovereignty.
Canada entered a trade dispute with the United States of America after bilateral agreement negotiations yielded no results. In this situation, Carney seeks closer cooperation with the EU, which he views as an example for other democratic countries.
In Strasbourg, he named several key areas in which Canada would like to deepen cooperation with the European Union. These include critical minerals, defense-industrial capabilities, artificial intelligence and digital capacities, energy security, space, and payment systems.
Carney also stated that Canada does not aim to create another geopolitical bloc to compete with great powers. According to him, the country does not seek power for the sake of dominating others, but rather wants to strengthen its resilience so that no one can control its open markets, undermine its sovereignty and territorial integrity, or threaten its freedoms, democracy, and the rule of law.
