Festival of National Cultures in Hrodna Starts with Arrests
Poles protested against the Russification of the only Polish-language school.
A rally against the Russification of a Polish school in Hrodna, Belarus, had to start at 11 AM. Thus, the activists of the Union of Poles in Belarus and independent journalists were detained. Mr. Pachobut, Mr. Dmukhouski and Ms. Kaliada are among them.
Some people were detained preventively, some near the building of the Regional Executive Committee, the meeting place.
Andzhej Pachobut, Edvard Dmukhouski, Ihar Bancar and an eco-activist Julija Kaliada are now placed in Hrodna’s police stations.
Civil-dressed persons are waiting near Alies Dzianisau’s and Andrej Fralou’s apartments.
Some detained persons’ names hasn’t been announced by the police.
Nasha Niva learned that 8 persons are to be tried for unauthorized rally.
The only released person is a journalist Jan Roman. He was detained at the entrance of his house, taken to the police station where he spent 3 hours and then released.
Only senior protestors were not detained unlike the young ones.
Today is the first day of the annual Festival of National Cultures in Hrodna. It started with rainy weather and mass detentions this year.
“Civil consent is the biggest Belarus’ wealth,” said Lukashenka in his address to the festival participants.
There is no a single Belarusian-language school and only one Polish-language in Hrodna, one of the regional centres of Belarus.
However, 75% of students attended Belarusian-language classes in 1975.
Belarusian-speaking youth supports the protests against the Russification of the Polish school in Hrodna.
