Barack Obama paid its token visit to Myanmar (previously Burma) where the authorities have recently released 50 political prisoners.
Obama met President Thein Sein and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Aung San Suu Kyi spent 15 years under the house and was released in 2010. President Obama called Suu Kyi “an icon of democracy”.
USA officials say Obama’s visit to Myanmar highlights the democratic changes in the country after dozens of years of dictatorship.
