The country should not be ashamed of such an inappropriate kind of tours.
According to a good old tradition, not synchronized and not-having-a-fixed-stance-on-the-issue Belarusian officials say ridiculous things and then disclaim this.
Thus, the Deputy Minister of Sports and Tourism of Belarus Czeslau Shulga believes that Belarus should not be ashamed of sex tourism. This was stated on June 4. “There is nothing to apologize for. This is something that is, for example, in demand in Denmark. They’ve found a trump card. We do not encourage it today by saying ‘welcome for sex services,’” he said.
“But if someone is interested, let him go, look for, get acquainted, date and marry,” said the official.
Czeslau Shulga also supports the idea of selling “more than a thousand ancestral estates” and dozens of uninhabited villages to investors, reports Telegraf.by.
“Let them buy for a base value (Br100k or $12). Thus, they will take the social burden: develop tourism for five to ten years,” he said.
However, such statements were not left unnoticed. The Belarusian Ministry of Sports and Tourism does not want the country to become a popular destination for sex tourists, said Uladzimir Niesciarovich who is the Spokesman for the ministry.
“I am absolutely sure that sex tourism is not the kind of tourism that Belarus should promote,” said Mr. Niesciarovich to BelaPAN. “I don’t want our country to be associated with some sex tours. We have cultural and historic heritage assets, health resorts, rural tourism spots and ecotourism attractions – a number of options to spend vacation decently.”
When asked to comment on media reports that Mr. Shulha had actually invited sex tourists to visit Belarus, the spokesman said that the remark had been taken out of context. “Perhaps, Cheslau Shulha wanted to turn the matter into a joke or play up to the journalist,” he said.
