There still is no legislation on animal cruelty.
Belarusian Parliament may debate a draft law that would criminalize animal cruelty, animal welfare activist Vital Supranovich told.
At present, people may be sentenced to a fine of 10 to 30 times the Base Rate for animal cruelty, but the bill would tighten the punishment.
Under the draft legislation, people may be charged with a criminal offense and sentenced to a fine, corrective labor or a jail term of up to three months for the cruel treatment of an animal resulting in its death. A person committing the second such offense would face up to one year in prison.
The lower chamber member told Mr. Supranovich that the bill had been submitted to Aliaksandr Lukashenka for consideration. If approved by the Belarusian leader, the draft law will be put on the agenda of the House of Representatives.
