Russian Wikipedia Shuts Down

Now for a day, protesting against new draft law.

Today Russian Wikipedia shut down for a day protesting against the second parliamentary hearings on the new draft law on information.

“Imagine the world without free knowledge,” says Russian-language Wikipedia’s main page.

“Today, June 10, the State Duma is giving the second reading to the bill of amendments to the ‘Law on Information’ which may lead to out-of-court censorship of the whole Russian Internet segment including Russian Wikipedia.

“The community of Wikipedia protests against the censorship that threatens the freedom of knowledge open for the humankind.”

The community also asks to support the campaign against the bill of amendments.

Similar events have already took place, but in English Wikipedia when the largest Wikipedia segment was blacked out protesting against Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) on January 18, 2012.
