It took a night to find a sponsor.
Yesterday ex-foreign minister Piatro Krauchanka shared the information that an unnamed Belarusian millionaire possesses The Little Travel Guide, the book issued by the first Belarusian publisher Francysk Skaryna in the first printing house of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the early XVI century.
Mr. Krauchanka called the opportunity to buy the book unique as this edition has not been sold on any antique market for several dozen years. Mr. Krauchanka has also voiced the estimated price of the book: from $200,000 to $500,000. Former Belarus’ FM ardently called on people to start a fundraising campaign.
“Several years ago I managed to find The Little Travel Guide. I now may say the edition is situated in Minsk. It is the possession of one of our millionaires — by the way, we have such millionaires — the former journalist, who offers the state to buy it. The sum is large and the state does not seem interested. The book may disappear.
“The Little Travel Guide is a unique book. The edition has not appeared on Europe’s book markets for last 30 years. I think it should be announced by the media the book is in Minsk and we should collect money little by little — as Poles did this after 1946: they put boxes on Warsaw’s streets to renew the King’s Palace.”
Mr. Krauchanka refrained from installing donation boxes but noted people could donate a dollar or two and Belarusian could restlessly do this until the sum was collected.
However, the next day Mr. Krauchanka said fundraising campaign isn’t urgent any more as, according to him, the government might have already found money. He promised that further information will appear tomorrow in the press.
The Little Travel Guide was published in Vilniusin 1522 . Today, only 7 books remained. The Little Travel Guide is considered to be an asset for collectors.
Recently, Belarus has experienced a true ‘boom’ of fundraising campaigns to buy antique books. Thus, Belarusians have already bought The Statute of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the campaign to buy Artis Magnae Artilleriae by Kazimir Siemianovich is currently underway.
