Now they may face up to 15 years in prison.
Three young women were arrested in Minsk last week for trying to steal money from a 56-year-old Israeli tourist while staying in his apartment, BelaPAN says.
The citizen of Israel, born in 1956, visits Belarus almost every year, Interfax.by reports.
The women, 19 and 20 years’ old, the students of Belarusian Trade College, met the Israeli in a night club on the night between August 14 and 15 and agreed to go to his apartment on Independence Avenue, the Investigative Committee of Belarus says.
While her accomplices kept the man distracted, one of his women stole a large amount of cash from his pocket, he said. The Israeli immediately stood in the doorway and told his guests to return his money. Simultaneously, he phoned his friend and asked him to call the police.
The women used a pepper spray can, threatened the man with a knife and threw glasses at him to get him out of their way. They put some of the money back before the police arrived, but kept more than $1,500 and two bottles of expensive liquors.
Two of the women were placed in a detention center pending their trial. Criminal proceedings were instituted in connection with the incident under Part Two of the Criminal Code's Article 207, which provides for a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.
