Anatol Liabiedzka severely criticized Europe's policy towards Belarus.
In the “carrot and stick” policy with regard to Belarus Europe uses only carrot, as stated the leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Liabiedzka during the press-conference in Minsk on September 21.
“Belarus receives half of the foreign currency from Europe. Moreover, the 2010 Presidential campaign of Aliaksandr Lukashenka was sponsored by the International Monetary Fund since the supplied on the eve funds were spent not on the modernization but on bribing the voters,” he said.
The UCP leader also stated that it is necessary to stop the Belarusian elections monitoring by the OSCE. According to him, the report on the elections in the country can be done while being in Rome or Vilnius without visiting Belarus.
Anatol Liabiedzka pointed out that before coming to Belarus to monitor the elections the OSCE should give a home task to the Belarusian authorities: to bring Belarusian legislation into accordance with the OSCE standards and to release the political prisoners. According to him, the authorities will do so since Minsk needs Europe more than Europe needs Minsk. “We don’t ask for any preferences, we ask to bring back free elections to the country,” he said.
