At the press-conference before the match, the manager of Valencia CF Mauricio Pellegrino said he hoped for victory: “We can’t allow so many defence mistakes. We have to win this out match, we haven’t done this for long.”
And they did. Tuesday evening’s game was the devastating victory of Valencia CF over BATE Barysau which ended with three goals scored by Spaniards against zero scored by Belarusians.
The BATE vs. Valencia clash was refereed by the Scottish referee brigade headed by Craig Thomson, while Moldova’s Vladimir Antonov was referee observer.
People were expecting FC BATE Barysau to repeat their unbelievable game against Bayern when three goals were scored by BATE and only one by legendary Bayern.
“We lost because of that goal in the end of the first half. That laid us low. We cannot dominate teams at this level. When we had to score we pushed forward leaving huge gaps in defence. The second half was bad – our passing was awful. We made childish mistakes in the simplest of situations.Of course, we want to qualify for the Champions League knockout phase, and we will do our best to do that. The game in Valencia will tell us a lot about our future prospects. We cannot get hung up over this defeat. We need to play our game,” says Edhar Aliakhnovich, BATE midfielder in an interview with UEFA.
However, despite of the score, the game was worth seeing.
“It was not an easy game. The key was the first goal, as after that BATE had to open up and we had more space. We started very well from the first minute, because we were very focused on doing our job. The next game will be the most important one of the first half of our season as a win could drive us into the knockout phase, and we will try to play the same way we did today. We knew Bayern lost here despite being superior in terms of possesion, but it is more important not to lose the ball because BATE are very quick in hitting back,” says Roberto Soldado, the forward for Valencia.
Now, the Group F situation is as follows:
1. BATE 3 played (6 points, goal difference 6:5)
2. Bayern 3 played (6; 4:4)
3. Valencia 3 played (6; 6:2)
4. Lille 3 played (0; 1:6).
BATE will play the return leg against Valencia in Spain on 7 November.
