Aliaksandr Lukashenka said that winning only 12 of planned 25 medals and Belarus’ being only 26th in the unofficial medal scoreboard in London was a failure but not a disaster.
Performance of Belarus Team in London was a failure, but not a disaster, president of Belarus and simultaneously President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Belarus Aliaksandr Lukashenka said opening the NOC meeting.
“It is clear that we need to drastically revise our approaches in this field. The upcoming Olympics will be held in the neighboring Russia, and success there is a matter of prestige. Society will not tolerate such failures of our national team as we witnessed this summer in the UK,” BelTA quotes him as saying.
According to Aliaksandr Lukashenka, winning 12 of the 25 medals we aimed for is a remarkable step backwards compared to the Beijing Olympics, although the Belarusian team did not reach the heights it aspired to in China either.
Lukashenka also told why so much attention is paid on sports in Belarus.
“We need to answer the question why, with this great attention paid to the sport by the state, there is degradation in many areas. Where is this light at the end of the tunnel? Who see it? Which direction we should go?” he asked.
“I want you to understand one thing: everything should be fair and honest. For me personally and for the state sports is a great thing, it is part of big economics.”
Lukashenka also said it is he to be blamed for Belarusian athletes’ failure at the London Olympics.
“I am far from blaming only the sport officials, members of the NOC, executive committee who are present here. Definitely, the major fault is the president’s one, not of the NOC only.”
