Swiss Against Registration for Lukashenka’s Regime Sponsor

Swiss mass media reports about the intentions of Belarusian authorities to register enterprise Soyuzkali in Kanton Zug, the region in the middle part of Switzerland.

The 50 per cent of stock is planned to belong to Belarusian potash giant Belaruskali, the second half — to Russian Uralkali.

In accordance with the laws of Zug, any information on the process of registration is secret until the registration is completed.

With Russian partners and Swiss official address, Lukashenka will be able to avoid sanctions on the way to giant revenue from Belarus’ potash sales, Нandelszeitung says.

Furthermore, the new Switzerland-based company — which is going to be ruled from Minsk — will have fewer issues with receiving loans. Taxation is also favourable there.

The Swiss authorities do not comment on the situation. However, the representatives of the Swiss People’s Party and the Green Party demand Zug politicians to find out whether it is possible to deny the registration to Lukashenka’s company. If no, it’s time to alter law then, they say.

Other critics of Belarusian regime are worried at the fact that Lukashenka may receive a chance to avoid the EU sanctions, Sonntagszeitung says.

“It is sad that Belarus may enlarge its budget due to the registration in Switzerland,” Lars Bünger, president of human rights organisation Liberico told.

“This is the paradox of the European policy towards Belarus.” Steve Woehrel, US Congress expert on Belarus says.

“The country under sanctions has many opportunities to avoid them and thus shows the sanctions have only symbolic meaning.”

Simon Greuter, the Council of Europe’s adviser on Belarus, is also surprised: “Such stance is not really convenient for Switzerland. It is widely known that is a vitally important financial source for Lukashenka regime. Belaruskali money is also used to fund Lukashenka’s secret police.”

Simon Greuter stresses that Belarusian human rights activists demand stricter sanctions against regime in Belarus including Belaruskali even if their financial condition deteriorates.
