Thousand-year-old brooches were found in the Brest region. They were created by the Wends and Goths.
In 2025, the collections of the Brest Regional Museum of Local Lore were enriched with valuable archaeological finds. Residents of the region found and handed over to the cultural institution ancient bronze fibulae — clothing clasps that are more than a thousand years old. The new items are already on display in the archaeological museum «Berestye».

Among the artifacts handed over, experts highlight two items that belong to different historical eras, the ONT channel reports.
The first relic is a fibula, which dates back to the 4th-3rd centuries BC. It was found in the Kamenets district near the village of Vygnyanka. According to scientists, this item belongs to the Pomeranian culture.

The second find was made near the village of Velikie Radvanichi, Brest district. This is a fragment of a fibula from the late 1st - early 2nd centuries AD. Experts suggest that it may belong to the Przeworsk or Wielbark cultures.

Roman Sych, head of the Brestye branch of the regional museum of local lore, explained the significance of these cultures for the history of the region:
"Some identify the Pomeranian culture with such a people as the Veneti. If we take the Wielbark culture, this is a culture that can be associated with the Goths. These artifacts allow us to better understand where the tribes lived. Accordingly, archaeologists, having received this information and items, will be able to conduct their research in a specific place, possibly even archaeological excavations."
Fibulae served not only as fasteners for clothing, but also as jewelry. They were actively used until the Middle Ages, until buttons replaced them.
Such finds are of particular value to researchers. The fashion for fibula shapes changed quite often, so they are a reliable chronological indicator for scientists. Thanks to them, it is possible to accurately date entire cultural layers.
In total, in 2025, the museum collections of the Brest Regional Museum of Local Lore were replenished with more than 680 exhibits. Among them are not only archaeological finds, but also documents, photographs, clothing and household items from different times.
