IAEA: Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant sarcophagus lost key safety features after drone strike
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has published the results of a survey of the sarcophagus at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was hit by a drone in February 2025, Meduza writes.

According to the IAEA, the sarcophagus "has lost its main safety functions, including the ability to limit (the release of radioactive substances)." At the same time, experts concluded that there was no irreversible damage to the supporting structures or monitoring systems of the sarcophagus.
"Limited temporary repairs have been carried out on the roof, but timely and comprehensive restoration remains necessary to prevent further destruction and ensure long-term nuclear safety," said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
In 2026, according to a statement released by the agency, it is planned, with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), to carry out temporary repairs on the sarcophagus in order to fully restore the protective structure after the end of the war.
