Trump Demands Zelenskyy Stop Destruction of Russian Oil Refineries Due to Threat of Global Fuel Shortage
The US President has publicly called on the Ukrainian leadership to abandon attacks on Russia's oil refining infrastructure. Trump is convinced that these strikes, and not tensions in other regions of the world, are provoking a global diesel fuel shortage and hitting global energy stability.
During a Sunday conversation with journalists on September 13, the American leader emphasized that it is Ukraine's actions that are creating problems with the supply of oil products. As reported by the Ukrainian 24 Channel with reference to Clash Report, Trump stated that Volodymyr Zelenskyy must do one thing — stop the destruction of diesel fuel in Russia.
The US President separately noted that the crisis is caused exclusively by the Russian-Ukrainian war, and not by the situation in the Middle East.
These public statements were preceded by a visit of an American delegation to Eastern Europe. A week before Trump's speech, his special envoys Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner visited Moscow, after which they headed to Kyiv. This was their first visit to the Ukrainian capital since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022. Later, Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Vladimir Putin. According to the US President himself, the issue of stopping strikes on oil refineries had already been discussed directly with the leadership of Ukraine.
Despite pressure from Washington, Ukrainian forces continue to systematically destroy fuel and logistics infrastructure deep within Russian territory. On the night of September 13, drones attacked two large enterprises: the "Slavyansky" oil refinery in Krasnodar Krai and the "Taneco" plant in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan, where fires were reported. Prior to this, on September 10, a series of strikes hit targets in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Dagestan. In particular, a maritime trade port used for military supplies between Russia and Iran was damaged, as well as a nearby oil depot and infrastructure of the Caspian Flotilla.
The Ukrainian side considers these operations a legitimate way to weaken the economy and military-industrial complex of the aggressor country. Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously officially warned Moscow of symmetrical harsh responses if the Russian army resumes winter missile strikes on the Ukrainian energy system.
