US President Donald Trump, during a visit to Dublin, stated that he would like to see a united Ireland, which would include Northern Ireland, currently under British rule, reports the BBC.
During his visit to Dublin, Trump was asked about his view on the possibility of Irish unification. He replied that he did not want to create any problems, but personally would be very happy to see the country united. According to him, he has friends on both sides of the border, and unification would be a "great honor for everyone".
Trump also stated that, in his opinion, the unification of Ireland would eventually happen and that it would be a "great thing." He also noted that Great Britain would have its own opinion on such a development.
Later, the American president tried to clarify his words. He said that the question of Irish unification is one of those topics on which it is almost impossible to give a good answer, regardless of how it is phrased. However, he emphasized that he personally considers the unification of Ireland a "very cool" idea.
On September 12, Trump arrived in Ireland for a two-day visit. Protests were planned in Dublin and Doonbeg in County Clare in connection with his arrival.
