In the late 18th century, Greek Catholicism in Belarus attempted to smoothly transition into Latinism
During the reign of Paul I (1796-1801), an interesting process was observed: the unauthorized transition of Greek Catholic priests along with their parishes to the Latin Rite,writeshistorian Dzianis Liseichykau on Facebook.
This was done unofficially, and the Uniate leadership was forced to search for such "Latinizers" and deprive them of their parishes. It is unknown how diligently these searches were conducted, as some churches with their parishes remained Roman Catholic churches (Akalova, Zavisina, Khataevičy, and others).
For the first time, I encountered a Uniate "Latinizer" priest, so to speak, openly.
On March 23, 1798, Martin Retsky, the priest of the Spas Church in Lahojsk, honestly wrote that he was now a Roman Catholic priest, and his parishioners were now Roman Catholics.
Despite the openness of the father's actions and the formal prohibition of such transitions, the entire Spas parish of Lahojsk was, in fact, Roman Catholic until the end of April 1799 (for more than a year).
Eventually, the "revolutionary" father was removed from the parish, everyone was returned to the Greek Rite, and a new, less radical priest was appointed to the church.
Nothing bad happened to Father Martin. For some time, he was kept without a permanent post, and in 1815, he was appointed priest of the Greek Catholic church in the village of Klinok, Ihumenski district.
The most interesting thing is that the unauthorized Lahojsk priest had a wife and seven children.
