In some Belarusian establishments, you can split the bill by QR code

In several Minsk establishments, it is now possible to split the bill using a QR code. The technical solution for this was developed by a team of IT specialists — the idea is that it should eliminate disputes like "whose salad is this" and "I didn't order this lemonade."

Onliner.by spoke with the founders about how this digital solution for public catering was made and whether it will leave waiters without tips.

The service is called Resty; it was developed by a team from Minsk — they are developing the project independently, with their own investments. The solution works autonomously, without being tied to any bank. Three establishments have already connected to it — Umami, Flow Izakaya Bar, and "Pena dnyov" [Foam of Days].

For the guest, the bill payment mechanism looks like this: they see a QR code on the table. They scan the code and land on a page where they can view the menu with photos and descriptions of dishes, call a waiter, split, and pay the bill. There is also a "share" option in case of force majeure.

Payment of the bill goes through Apple Pay, Google Pay, a bank card, or the Russian "Fast Payment System".

Maxim, one of the project creators, said that the idea was prompted by a dinner with friends — that day the place was full, and 10 people were sitting at their table. As a result, they waited 20 minutes for the waiter, and then almost another half hour was spent splitting the bill themselves and calculating on calculators who owed what. Later, on vacation, he came across a restaurant that had a small self-made service for splitting bills — he wanted to create his own.

Maxim emphasizes: the goal is not to replace traditional payment methods, but to provide an alternative that will enhance the quality of service.

— There's no need to register anywhere, no need to download an app, you just access it via a QR code — the bill is displayed. Moreover, the bill also doesn't need to be selected — the one linked to the table is immediately visible.

We recently connected the Russian "Fast Payment System," which many Russians use for payments. For them, it's a common method; they often ask establishments if there's a QR code for payment. According to the interviewee, the service directly integrates with the restaurant's POS system; a separate link is generated for each table, and a QR code is created from it.

The waiter assigns a specific dish to the table where the guest is sitting in the system — Resty "understands" which table it is, what was ordered there, and how much it costs.

— At what point do I need to tap/use the card?

— No need to tap/use it, it's paid online. We work with the bePaid system. There are buttons for Apple Pay, Google Pay, SBP, or simply "Enter Card" — which is exactly the payment page of this system. bePaid is a licensed tool, certified by the National Bank.

— If a person only has a card, do they need to enter its details?

— Yes, and the payment page allows you to save card details if the guest checks the box, so they don't have to enter them in the future. In reality, as we see from payments, this breakdown by methods is more or less the same, meaning it's not a strong stop-factor for people.

— If the QR code splits the bill, and I also choose dishes there, what should I tip the waiter for?

— In general, tips are not just a reward for good service from a waiter; they are left for a good atmosphere and service. And good service is precisely in the small details, where stress factors are removed from a person. Plus, we do not exclude the presence of a waiter; they still greet the guest, take orders, and can offer advice.

There is no tipping functionality in the service yet, but such a development direction may emerge. The team's immediate plans include adding a table reservation option.
