In the Mstislavl district, employees of the inter-district inspection for the protection of fauna and flora detained a man who was illegally harvesting the broad-clawed crayfish — a species listed in the Red Book of Belarus and not allowed for commercial or amateur fishing.
According to the inspection materials, the poacher used 17 crayfish traps. As a result, he caught 740 individuals with a total weight of about 24.5 kilograms. The damage caused to the environment is estimated at 3330 basic units.
Part of the caught animals managed to be saved. Inspectors released 411 live broad-clawed crayfish into their natural environment, which helped preserve a significant number of rare individuals.
The detainee admitted that he knew about the protected status of this species. According to him, he engaged in illegal fishing for profit, and used the caught crayfish as a kind of "live currency" — paying them to other people for various services.
On the fact of illegal extraction of animals listed in the Red Book, the Mstislavl District Department of the Investigative Committee has initiated a criminal case under Part 4 of Article 281 of the Criminal Code of Belarus.
