"One of the two who decided to stay last night spoke with some of her teammates who had left and changed her mind," Immigration Minister Tony Burke told the Australian Parliament on Wednesday, writes the BBC.
Previously, both women — footballer Mahadeseh Zalfi and company employee Zahra Soltan Meshke Kar — joined five other players who were granted visas to stay in the country for security reasons.
All other Iranian athletes left Australia on Tuesday evening local time — two days after being eliminated from the AFC Asian Cup.
"In Australia, people have the right to change their minds. We respect the circumstances in which she made this decision," Burke said. "Unfortunately, when making this decision, her teammates and coach advised her to contact the Iranian embassy and pack her things."
He reported that as a result of this call, the Iranian embassy learned the location of the footballers who decided to stay. After this, the minister added, he ordered them to be immediately moved to another safe location.
