A fire broke out on the cargo ship Mayuree Naree, flying the flag of Thailand, and all 23 crew members were evacuated by the Oman Navy. The vessel was en route from Khalifa Port in the UAE.
The container ship One Majesty, flying the flag of Japan, sustained a 10 cm hull breach and was heading to the nearest safe port. It was en route from Ras Al Khaimah port in the UAE.
Another cargo ship, Star Gwyneth, flying the flag of the Marshall Islands, sustained hull damage, but the crew was unharmed.
After the shelling, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that the strikes targeted two cargo ships that allegedly ignored warnings: Express Rome, flying the flag of Liberia (owned by Israel), and Mayuree Naree, flying the flag of Thailand.
The incident is related to the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz following US and Israeli strikes on Iranian territory. The Strait handles 20-25% of global oil shipments, so any disruptions cause oil prices to rise.
Earlier, on March 10, reports emerged about the start of mine-laying in the strait, and the US command announced the destruction of several Iranian warships, including mine layers.
