Belarusian Students Won Six Gold Medals at the International Mathematics Olympiad
In the overall team standings, our guys came in second.
Students of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics at BSU won six gold medals at the 33rd International Mathematics Olympiad. The awards were secured by second-year students Vasil Dzianisau and Hleb Sciapanychau, third-year students Macvej Vylehzhanin and Usiaslau Krasnenka, as well as fourth-year students Macvej Zorka and Mikita Shutro, the Ministry of Education reports.
The team leaders were representatives of the Department of Fundamental Mathematics and Intellectual Systems of FPMI BSU: senior lecturer Siarhei Charnou and associate professor Hanna Zadarazhniuk.
In terms of the number of gold medals, the team took second place among 135 university teams, conceding only to the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.
The Olympiad took place from July 27 to August 3 in Blagoevgrad (Bulgaria) and gathered about 500 participants from 48 countries. Students had to solve 10 problems from the fields of algebra, mathematical analysis, combinatorics, analytic geometry, and number theory.
The BSU team has participated in the Olympiad since 2001. During this period, their awards treasury includes 103 medals, among which are 52 gold, including seven Grand Prix and absolute first places. The BSU team has twice become the first in the world in the overall team standings.
