Sports Minister Ahmed Donyamali stated on state television channel Irib that the final decision will be made by Iran's Supreme National Security Council in cooperation with the government, Bild writes.
The Supreme National Security Council is the country's main executive body and operates under the supervision of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, as well as under the leadership of President Masoud Pezeshkian. The Football Federation and the Ministry of Sports of Iran are only responsible for preparing the national team.
Previously, FIFA President Gianni Infantino insisted on Iran's participation in the tournament. In an interview, he stated: "We want Iran to play, and Iran will play in the World Cup. There is no plan B, C, or D — there is only plan A."
The FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico kicks off on June 11. Iran is scheduled to play its matches in the USA in a group with Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand.
It was previously reported that Iran's matches might be moved to Mexico. Or, in case the national team withdraws from the championship, they would be replaced by the best-ranked team from Asia. Since the Iraqi national team qualified for the World Cup through playoffs, the UAE team could be that team.
