Around 50 Thousand Girls Already Vaccinated Against Human Papillomavirus

In Belarus, approximately 50 thousand girls and 11 thousand women have already been vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV), reported on the "First Information" broadcast. The free vaccination program started in 2025.

This vaccination is very important, as some types of HPV are the main cause of cervical cancer. In total, more than 200 types of the virus are known, but at least 14 of them are considered dangerous and can cause oncological diseases. In addition to cervical cancer, HPV can also cause cancer of other organs.

The effectiveness of the vaccine has already been proven: it reduces the risk of developing cervical cancer by 25-30 times. In countries where such vaccination was introduced earlier, the number of new cases of this disease has significantly decreased.

In Belarus, girls aged 11 and older are vaccinated for free. Vaccination is voluntary and is carried out with a preparation that protects against two of the most dangerous types of the virus (16 and 18), which cause about 70% of cervical cancer cases. There is also an option to get a paid vaccine that protects against a greater number of strains.

HPV is transmitted primarily through sexual contact, but can also spread through other means — skin-to-skin contact, minor injuries, and from mother to child during childbirth. Therefore, prevention, including vaccination, is considered a key way to protect health.
