The Donald Trump administration extended the validity of exceptions that allow countries to buy sanctioned Russian oil and oil products, Reuters reports.
Washington thus seeks to curb global energy prices, which have risen sharply amidst the American-Israeli war with Iran, the agency notes.
The US Treasury Department allowed the purchase of oil loaded onto vessels as of Friday until May 16 — this is an extension of the original 30-day waiver, which expired on April 11, according to a document published on the department's website.
The extension was issued two days after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Washington would not continue the waiver which allowed countries to purchase Russian oil without the risk of US sanctions.
These waivers could complicate Western efforts to deprive Russia of war revenues in Ukraine and lead to disagreements between Washington and its allies, Reuters notes.
Indeed, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that now is not the time to weaken sanctions against Russia.
