45-year-old Nadir Santos da Silva drowned in the sea in southern Catania, Sicily, after rushing to the aid of sisters from her community, reports catholic.by.
«Her gesture of help reflects her entire life, which was a continuous gift,» said the Archbishop of Catania upon learning of her death.
Sister Nadir, together with three other Carmelite sisters, was walking in the water near the shore. An invisible crevice in the sand caused the sisters, who probably couldn't swim, to fall into deep water and be covered by waves. Sister Nadir unhesitatingly rushed to their aid.
She helped three sisters get to shore, but she herself drowned due to exhaustion and inhaling seawater. One of the rescued sisters tried to help her by pulling her out of the water, but Sister Nadir was already unconscious.
Sister Nadir was originally from Brazil. She belonged to the Congregation of Carmelite Missionary Sisters of the Holy Spirit and served in the community of San Giovanni La Punta, where the news of her death quickly spread among the faithful, priests, and parishioners, causing immense shock. Her spiritual director remembers her as a person who was not satisfied with half-measures.
«She was a woman incapable of settling for mediocrity, who constantly sought fullness and avoided superficiality. Her search for God was sincere and marked by authenticity: not devoid of struggles, suffering, or contradictions, but always animated by a thirst for truth,» says Bruno Lins.
He mentions that the Carmelite sister's life story is an image of God's Mercy. «In her youth, she was far from faith, calling herself a rebellious punk and anarchist.
However, the power of the Holy Spirit led her to a profound transformation, transforming her former rebellion into complete devotion to God in Carmel,» emphasizes Father Lins. As her motto, the Carmelite sister chose the words of John Paul II: «Love allowed me to understand everything».
The Archbishop of Catania reminds us that Sister Nadir was the superior of the sisters whom she rushed to help. «This was her last gesture of love,» emphasizes Archbishop Luigi Rena. He says that the superior of the Carmelite community was much loved. She knew how to attract people to her.
