Journalist Ivashyn Celebrates His Birthday in Captivity for the Sixth Time

Today, Dzianis Ivashyn turned 47 years old.

This is the sixth time the journalist celebrates his birthday in captivity, and the third time in pre-trial detention center No. 8 in Zhodzina, where he is held under prison regime, Radio Svaboda writes.

For a year and a half now, Dzianis has not been allowed to call relatives, but letters and postcards reach him.

In one of his last letters, the political prisoner sent his relatives a new poem, which his wife Volha posted on Facebook.

I listen. I hear the whisper of dewy ears of grain,
The chattering gulls over the bubbling Plisa,
The conversation of the wind in the stillness of ancient forests,
And the Kolyuzhany song that cradles the crib.

"This is again a quatrain, Dzianis wrote and sent it to his parents last Thursday. We definitely like the speed with which new correspondence reaches us from Dzianis, may it continue this way!" — commented Volha Ivashyna, the political prisoner's wife, on the Facebook post.

According to Volha Ivashyna, her husband continues to read a lot in prison and makes plans for further self-education in sciences such as political science and sociology.

"He compiled a list of non-fiction literature he intends to read. There are more than 10 titles," notes the journalist Ivashyn's wife.

Volha does not have much information about her husband's physical condition.

"Usually he adds: 'physical condition is normal, no cause for concern, morale is high.' It's the same now," Volha Ivashyna reported.

Dzianis Ivashyn was detained on March 12, 2021, in Hrodna and sentenced to 13 years and 1 month in prison for allegedly "treason against the state" (Art. 356 of the Criminal Code) and "illegal collection and dissemination of information about private life" (Art. 179 of the Criminal Code). He is held under strict regime conditions in prison No. 8 in Zhodzina.
