In the parliamentary elections in Armenia on June 7, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's "Civil Contract" party garnered 49.81% of the votes. This is less than half — but in parliament, it will receive about 58% of the mandates and maintain a single-party majority.
According to preliminary results, four forces overcame the threshold:
- "Civil Contract" (Pashinyan) — 49.81% (727,160 votes);
- Block "Strong Armenia" — 23.29% (340,062);
- Block "Armenia" — 9.94% (145,097);
- Party "Prosperous Armenia" — 4.00% (58,368).
The other parties did not overcome the electoral threshold to enter parliament.
Translated to 101 mandates, this gives approximately the following distribution: "Civil Contract" — about 59 seats, "Strong Armenia" — 27, "Armenia" — 11, "Prosperous Armenia" — 4.
The system in Armenia is proportional, but mandates are distributed only among those who overcame the electoral threshold. The D'Hondt method, according to which seats are allocated in Armenia, additionally gives a few more mandates to the largest party.
Voter turnout was almost 59% — significantly higher than in previous elections. The voting took place against the backdrop of Armenia's pivot from Russia to Europe: Pashinyan sought a mandate for a pro-European course, while among his opponents were pro-Russian forces, including the "Strong Armenia" block of Russian-Armenian businessman Samvel Karapetyan.
The results are still preliminary — the Central Election Commission of Armenia is expected to announce the final ones later. The exact number of mandates may slightly change due to counting peculiarities and four seats reserved for national minorities, but the overall balance of power will remain the same.
