The biographical film "Michael" about Michael Jackson became the highest-grossing film based on real events, collecting $977 million at the global box office, reports Variety.
It surpassed the record of "Oppenheimer" (2023), which earned $975 million, and also became the highest-grossing musical biopic, surpassing "Bohemian Rhapsody" (2018) with a result of $911 million.
In addition, "Michael" set a record for opening weekend box office receipts among musical biopics, earning $97 million in the US and $217 million worldwide in its first weekend.
In total, by the evening of June 28, "Michael" had collected $607.2 million outside the US, and $370.2 million at the American box office.
The film by director Antoine Fuqua tells the creative journey of Michael Jackson from performing with the Jackson 5 to his status as the "King of Pop." The lead role was played by the singer's nephew Jaafar Jackson, and the Jackson family partially financed the filming.
