Scientists released the first batch of specially bred rare snakes into Belarusian nature
The implementation of a project to conserve the smooth snake (Coronella austriaca) — the rarest snake in the country, listed in the Red Book — has begun in Belarus. Scientists have already released the first young individuals, which were raised in special conditions, writes "Smartpress".
The project was developed by specialists from the Polessky Agrarian-Ecological Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Initially, they investigated places where populations of the smooth snake still survived and identified the largest one in the southwest of Polesia. Work was carried out there to improve the living conditions for the rare reptile.
However, the expected increase in the number of snakes did not occur. On the contrary, over several years, the population began to decline. According to scientists, the reason was that with more snakes in a small area, they more often died under the wheels of vehicles or became prey for birds of prey.
After this, researchers changed their approach. They caught a male and a female smooth snake, and their offspring began to be raised in safe conditions so that the young snakes could reach an age where their chances of survival in the wild became significantly higher.
A section near one of the villages with meadows, shrubs, and sparse woodland was chosen for release. According to specialists, this place is well-suited for young smooth snakes and less attractive to their natural enemies.
The first bred snakes were released into nature on June 19. According to scientists' observations, they quickly adapted and dispersed throughout the surrounding territory.
Researchers hope that these individuals will form the basis of a new population of the rare reptile. Next year, another group of young smooth snakes is planned to be released, and meanwhile, specialists continue to observe how they adapt to their natural environment.
