According to Antonio Tajani, Russia continues to use hybrid methods against Western countries, including Italy, which constitutes a serious and unacceptable interference in the activities of state institutions and a threat to national security.

The decision to expel them was made after two former employees of the Italian intelligence services were arrested in Rome on suspicion of transferring secret information to a person believed to be a Russian intelligence agent enjoying diplomatic immunity.
