Belarusian director Yauhen Karniah performs a play in Moscow about Hitler's last days in the bunker
The Moscow Jewish Theater "Shalom" announced its plans for the 2026-2027 season, among the premieres is a play by Yauhen Karniah, the chief director of the Belarusian Puppet Theater, Reform.news writes .
The first showings of Karniah's play "Magda," based on the play by British playwright Michael Arditti, will take place on September 12 and 13. The action of the play takes place in Hitler's bunker in Berlin on April 22, 1945. The plot is based on the meeting between Eva Braun, Hitler's mistress, and Magda Goebbels, wife of Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. Through the images of people who found themselves close to power, an attempt is made to explore the process of transforming cultural and humanistic Germany into a Nazi state governed by violence.
"The bunker seems to have assembled a mini-model of German society of that time: naive people who didn't want to know anything about the atrocities of Nazism, representatives of the 'common people' who sincerely supported Hitler, a fanatic, an intellectual, an ideologue, and the 'future of the nation' — children who believe that their parents and Uncle Führer are 'the best people on the planet'," the annotation states.
"How did it happen that excellent Germany — the homeland of Schiller, Goethe, Dürer, Mann, Remarque, Brecht, and hundreds of other great humanists — turned into a Nazi state that burned people and destroyed freedom? Who will answer for millions of destroyed lives and ruined homes? Who will be punished, and is there such a thing?" — the audience is invited to ponder these questions.
Karniah defined the genre of the new production as "a lullaby transforming into a horror."
Working on the premiere alongside the director are artist Tatsiana Nersisian, lighting designer Mikalai Surkou, and composer Katsiaryna Averka.
This is Yauhen Karniah's first work on the "Shalom" stage.
The "Shalom" Theater was founded in 1988 as the first and only professional Jewish theater in Russia. Over the years, it has established itself as an experimental venue where plays on acute social and cultural themes are staged. "Shalom" attracts audiences not only with Jewish productions but also with projects dedicated to universal human values. The theater actively collaborates with directors and playwrights working in the genre of social theater.
