Nexta explained whether Russian special services could have disinformed it in 2020 to influence the protest
The creator of the Nexta resource, Stepan Putilo, in an interview with Radio Svaboda journalist Dmitry Gurnevich answered the question of whether Russian intelligence could have deliberately disinformed his employees in 2020 to radicalize the protest and as a result push Belarus away from the West. This possibility was suggested by the former head of Polish intelligence, Piotr Krauchyk.
"If this person was then in charge of Polish intelligence, he could have organized surveillance of our office. And maybe he did. Our office was then in the very center of Warsaw, next to the Sejm. We could have been bugged, and if there were suspicions, we could have been charged. The person wants to confirm their opinion in this way.
An interview with Piotr Krauchyk was published on our channel, it was done for us by journalist Ihar Kuley. Krauchyk repeated this there. Of course, Russia was interested in getting involved in these elections. But the Nexta project was not involved in these plans," said Putilo.
He explained that all protest plans and routes were developed by various Belarusian politicians and activists in a closed Telegram chat "Khata" (Home). Therefore, Krauchyk's words that the Nexta channel disseminated instructions sent by Russian special services do not correspond to the facts.
"He also said that special services disinformed us when they sent info from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) and the KGB. But we received information from ordinary people, we verified the information, we received photos of service IDs. And we checked that information with people from those same agencies. And it was confirmed.
Later, they started making so-called controlled leaks, placing periods and commas in different places. Then they stopped doing it.
But we still had sources inside Belarus; one of them was Uladzimir Zhyhar, who is now in "Belpole". He was listed in my phone as "MVD Mozyr". These were real people.
We still have sources in Belarus now, but we asked them not to contact us for the time being. But we had people from the President's Security Service, the KGB, from a variety of different structures," said Stepan Putilo.
