The Minsk city police have rounded up five Egyptian citizens whom they accuse of planning “extremist” activities in the European Union.
The Egyptians had entered Belarus illegally and were planning to travel to a European Union country “for participation in an underground resistance movement aimed at countering the social and political order of European countries” when they were arrested last week, according to the Minsk city police.
A police inquiry reportedly established that the men had taken part in hostilities during Egypt's civil unrest. They had allegedly decided to travel to the EU through Belarus after learning that Belarus' border guards had loosened control over travelers crossing the border into the 27-nation bloc.
The police noted an increase in the number of illegal migrants from Arab countries attempting to travel to the EU via Belarus “with unfriendly intentions”. According to the police, such migrants explain that they seek revenge for Western countries' involvement in uprisings in their countries.
