The President repeats the same he told in 2009 and 2011.
Aliaksandr Lukashenka refuted the rumors on possible devaluation and denomination of the national currency during the meeting on the economy performance in 2012, year-end results evaluation and budget and monetary policy forecasts for 2013.
“There are much anonymous talks on devaluation, denomination, etc. However, the project of budget is in trillions of Belarusian roubles, and we do not provide for any devaluation and furthermore denomination,” Lukashenka said.
“Explain people we will not devaluate the currency: there is no need for this today. We do not restrain [foreign exchange currency] rate. It is as it is. I told it the Chairperson of the National Bank when I appointed her and I always monitor the situation. The rumors are probably originate in opposition, they start scaring people.”
Belarusian national currency was devaluated in 2009 and 2011. As a result, Belarusian rouble is four time less valuable than previously.
If compare with neighbors’ currencies, Belarusian rouble is the biggest looser: Russian and Lithuanian currencies exchange rates have remained almost unchanged and Ukrainian hryvnas lost devaluated by 60%.
During the Lukashenka’s rule, the inflation and devaluation rates in Belarus have been the continent’s highest.
