On its way to the WTO Belarus has faced a political fence, Belarus President Aliaksandr Lukashenka told in an interview with Mir TV channel.
“We have been mulling over this issue for a long time, have conducted necessary negotiations but faced a political fence. They say the WTO is a purely trade and economic organization. Nothing of the kind, the politics rule there,” BelTA quotes Lukashenka.
“The urgency of acceding to the WTO has vanished after Russia entered the Organization. In fact now we will be working within the World Trade Organization, especially taking into account that Russia is our main partner. Maybe it is even for the better, we will gradually get used to the WTO rules.”
“We, with our export-oriented economy, cannot insulate ourselves from the world. And we depend on the whole world. Sooner or later we will make our entry to the World Trade Organization,” he noted.
Lukashenka also told that the EU wanted to ‘overturn’ Belarus.
“Belarus-EU relations are a continuing example of how the European Union wants to overturn not only our history but our country as well.”
“They keep criticizing us, using double standards,” Aliaksandr Lukashenka stressed.
Speaking about the assessment of the parliamentary elections in Belarus by western observers, the President noted: “In the sidelines, they are all unanimous in having no pretensions to Belarus.”
“They all voice it, both openly and secretly, and then write in the reports what have been prepared by Brussels politicians who do not even know where Belarus is. Even if they know, they think that apart from a marsh and two rivers there is nothing here,” Aliaksandr Lukashenka added.
