Lukashenka: New Parliament Should Be More Open

The parliament should become more open, Aliaksandr Lukashenka mentioned at the final meeting of the outgoing legislative assembly.

There should be more interaction with other departments, particularly the Government, the national bodies of state administration. “To get the result we should work together. Lawmaking should be as open as possible to citizens. We have nothing to hide,” said the head of state.

According to Lukashenka, there is a need for a wider use of such forms of work as public debates and public examination of bills. “For these purposes, you can and should make a greater use of the Internet, as it is done in many foreign countries, including Russia,” he said. He believes that this will dispel many myths, increase the responsibility of MPs and make feedback more effective.

Among other suggestions regarding the work of the parliament of the next convocation, Aliaksandr Lukashenka stressed the continuity and the previous legislative and political experience. “The work of the two chambers of Parliament should be as coordinated as possible. All substantive issues need be addressed at the early stages of work with a bill,” the Belarusian president said.

Lukashenka stressed that lawmaking should keep pace with the times, and there should be no extremes or rush to meet the deadlines.

The President wished the newly-elected MPs to spend more face-time with people, talk openly with ordinary people and take their opinion into account.

“And, perhaps, the most important thing: MPs of the fifth convocation will need to secure the implementation of the goals outlined in Belarus’ social and economic development program through 2015. It is high responsibility as the parliamentary work will be directly connected with this program,” Aliaksandr Lukashenka said.

“I am convinced that the Belarusian parliament will be guided by one major goal, i.e. protection of the interests of our people,” the head of state said.
