Sannikau's Press Secretary Atroshchankau Escaped from Country in Early September
Aliaksandr Atroshchankau is one of the key persons of the European Belarus consortium. He was among the aides of Andrej Sannikau during the 2010 election campaign. For the participation in the protest rally on December 19, 2010, he was sentenced for 4 years in prison, but was released in accordance with the decision by Lukashenka. Atroshchankau never appealed for the presidential pardon.
Nasha Niva: Aliaksandr, did you really decide not to return in Belarus?
Aliaksandr Atroshchankau: Yes. I’ve been abroad since September 3.
NN: Why did you decide to leave?
AA: I was on my way to Belarus on September 3 returning home from an international conference. And there was an attempt either to capture me or to arrest or to kidnap. I even have no idea how to call that incident. Few stations before Minsk, civil-dressed persons boarded the car and watched me. I called me wife Natallia Radzina and told her I could have been arrested. In Minsk, I didn’t drop in at hoe as they could wait for me there. I considered escape options.
NN: How did you manage to leave the country?
AA: I wouldn’t like to reveal my way as other persons may use it to escape from Belarus.
NN: Where are you now?
AA:In Warsaw. I plan to stay here.
NN:Is your family together with you?
AA: My wife and my son have recently arrived in Warsaw.
NN: What are you going to do in Warsaw?
AA: My work will be civil activism for the benefit of Belarus.
NN: Is your decision to stay in Poland somehow connected to the same of Zmicier Bandarenka and Andrej Sannikau?
AA: I told Bandarenka about this situation. May be my story became an incentive for him to stay in Warsaw. It’s more likely that I’ve influenced their opinion, but not they influenced mine.
NN: Why did you conceal your decision?
AA: Because I had to bring my family there. But I never concealed it and told all as it was, if asked.
NN: Will you apply for political shelter?
AA: We’ll see. I would not like to. Now I am considering my stay in Warsaw as a long-term business trip.
