Russian diplomat, who previously worked at the US embassy and was recruited, sentenced to 12 years for treason

The Moscow City Court sentenced 42-year-old former Russian Foreign Ministry employee Arseniy Konovalov to 12 years in a strict-regime penal colony, the FSB Public Relations Center reported.
According to law enforcement, during a long-term assignment in the US, Konovalov "proactively transferred secret information that became known to him through his service to American intelligence for monetary reward."
After being dismissed from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the former diplomat worked at Roscosmos.
According to Russian media, Konovalov was detained by the FSB on March 28, 2024. Russian special services learned about him thanks to their agents in the US intelligence community.
It was reported that Konovalov was recruited by the CIA while working as the second secretary of the Russian Consulate General in Houston, Texas, from 2014 to 2017.
Following the news of the verdict, the FSB published a video of Konovalov's detention inside a minivan. In these frames, law enforcement officers ask the man if he knows what happened, to which he replies "no."
